A New Chapter for Yellowstone's Upper School

Happy New Year, upper school families!

As we begin a new semester at Yellowstone Schools, I wanted to share how incredibly proud I am of all of our students and the remarkable academic progress happening across Yellowstone Schools. From our youngest learners in PreK3 to our high school scholars preparing for college, students are showing tremendous growth, joy, and resilience every day. We were founded to provide a high-quality education for students in Houston’s historic Third Ward community. We are achieving that goal every day, and I am even more excited about our future. As we look ahead, I would like to share a change that will enable us to expand opportunities and strengthen the support we provide to our upper school students.

A New Chapter for Yellowstone’s Upper School

Beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, our middle and high schools will be supported by a larger educational organization, bringing expanded resources, stronger academic support, and additional opportunities for students. In light of today’s evolving political and educational landscape—particularly changes to statewide accountability systems and funding structures—the Board of Directors voted to voluntarily return our charter to the Texas Education Agency at the conclusion of the 2025–2026 school year. This step allows Yellowstone’s upper school to join the charter of a larger organization, positioning it for long-term stability and success while continuing to serve Yellowstone students and families with excellence. Together, these changes ensure that Yellowstone Schools will continue to offer an exceptional, enhanced educational experience for students from PreK through 12th grade by leveraging the strength and support of a broader statewide network.

Celebrating Significant Academic Growth

All of these decisions come at a moment when student achievement is showing exceptional momentum. 79% of English II students meet state standards, and Biology results have soared—“masters” tripled, 90% of students earned approaches/meets, and the failure rate dropped from 42% to 19%. Our college-readiness efforts are stronger than ever, with 100% of juniors taking the ACT/SAT and every founding senior expected to earn at least one AP credit. All seniors are on track to graduate, and 90% are on track for college admission.

Looking Ahead

Next school year, we will celebrate 25 years of educational excellence in Houston’s Third Ward and our first graduating class of high school seniors. We are grateful for everyone who partners with us in our mission, and we look forward to serving students from PreK3 to 12th grade for many years to come.
